Blood draws are typically done fasting. For tests related to blood sugar, lipids, liver function, ions, and iron, at least 12 hours of fasting is required prior to sample collection.
On the morning before the blood draw, you can drink plenty of still water, as this greatly facilitates the blood collection.
Do not consume coffee, sugary drinks, or alcohol, as they can affect the test results.
Medications
It is recommended to take medications after the sample collection, if it is feasible for the patient's health; otherwise, they can be taken before the blood draw with a glass of water.
Physical activity
Avoid intense physical exertion on the day before the blood draw.

The morning period is the most suitable for a blood draw.
How is the blood draw performed?
The process begins with informing the patient appropriately and completing and signing a consent form before the sample collection.
The blood draw is usually performed from the vein located in the crook of the elbow. The assistant first applies a tourniquet to the arm to make the veins more visible and palpable. After disinfecting the site of the sample collection, a small puncture is made with a sterile needle. The blood collection tubes are then placed onto the end of the needle in a specified order.

If you usually feel unwell during a blood draw, have fainted before, or are allergic to disinfectants, please inform the assistant before the sample collection.

How should one prepare for a urine test?
It is most advisable to use the first morning midstream urine sample, as it is more concentrated than daytime urine.
After preliminary cleansing, only the midstream urine should be collected in the container.
About 100 ml of urine is needed.
The urine sample should always be collected and transported in a clean container or cup.
Urine collection should be avoided during menstruation.
Sterile urine is only required for microbiological examinations.
What should be done with the collected urine?
- For most analyses, urine should be collected for up to 24 hours.
- On the day of urine collection, empty your bladder in the morning; this urine is not needed, but note the time, as this marks the start of the 24-hour collection period.
- After that, the urine should be collected in a suitably sized container or glass during the specified period. Care should be taken to ensure that urine does not enter the container during bowel movements.
- At the end of the 24 hours, empty your bladder into the collection container.
- It is advisable to collect the urine in a clean 2-liter jar or a mineral water bottle (using a funnel).
- It is advisable to mark the collection container with an alcohol-based marker in deciliters, using a kitchen measuring cup for accuracy.
- During the collection period, the urine should be kept in a cool place.
- At the end of the collection, the urine volume should be read according to the markings. If no markings were made, the collected urine should be measured using a measuring cup, and the value should be recorded accurately.
- After this, the urine should be mixed thoroughly, and a quantity of 100-200 ml should be transferred to a clean glass container. This small amount should be taken to the laboratory, but it is very important to write the measured urine volume on the request form for the test.
- For a urine catecholamine test, the total urine volume must be submitted and collected in the containers provided by the laboratory.
How should one prepare for a stool blood test?
- The stool sample should be brought in a container that can be obtained without a prescription at the pharmacy.
- Dietary restrictions are not necessary before the sample collection.
- The test may be affected by a bleeding hemorrhoid, menstruation, or bloody urine.
- Generally, samples taken at three different times are required. The samples can be stored in a cool place, protected from sunlight, for up to one week.
How should one prepare for a glucose tolerance test?
- The test is performed in the morning while fasting.
- A diet containing at least 250 grams of carbohydrates is required for three days prior to the test.
- The test should be performed under resting conditions, and eating, drinking, or smoking is not allowed.
- The test is preceded by a fasting blood sugar check; if the value is 7.8 mmol/l or higher, the glucose tolerance test will not be performed.
- The patient must consume 75 grams of glucose, which is dissolved in 200-300 ml of water.
- The pre-measured 75 grams of glucose can be purchased without a prescription at pharmacies.
- After the zero-minute blood draw, a blood sample is required again 120 minutes after the dose is consumed.
- At the request of the attending physician, additional blood draws may be needed at 60-minute intervals or at specified times. During this period, you must remain in the clinic.
How can you receive the results?
The completed results will be sent to the referring doctors via email, and the results can be accessed in the EESZT (Electronic Health Record System).
